This article covers the pre-testing genetic counseling appointment - the visit where a counselor reviews your history and determines whether genetic testing is medically recommended for you. This is different from the post-testing counseling appointment, where a counselor reviews your results after testing is complete; see “What Happens When I Get My Results?” for that appointment.
Based on your pre-testing appointment, your genetic counselor will recommend and order genetic testing if it’s medically appropriate. If you decide to proceed, the lab will bill your insurance for the test and ship you a sample collection kit.
Once your test is ordered, most day-to-day communication about your testing and counseling will be directly between you and your telehealth provider and the lab - including any questions about testing costs or insurance coverage. We’ll upload your final results to your Probably Genetic profile once testing is complete, and our support team is always available if you have questions along the way.
